The red-colored Fort Frederik, a US National Historic Landmark, sits on the west end of the island of St. Croix - on the edge of the town Frederiksted. The town is known locally as Freedom City because of its history. It is where the slave emancipation was proclaimed on July 3, 1848 after the uprising led by Moses Gottlieb, better known as General Buddhoe. It is also the site of the Fireburn - the labor revolt in October 1878 famously led by several women now known as the Queens of Fireburn: Queen Mary, Queen Matilda, and Queen Agnes.
This quaint town holds a significant historical importance of the history of the island itself, and while many of the buildings in town now are either neglected or abandoned we must not forget its value.
