The sixth installment of the "Movements" series draws homage to the cultural icon of the Moko Jumbie. This heritage, originating in West Africa brought to the Caribbean, is a beloved staple in the history of St. Croix. Moko is a Central African word meaning "healer", while Jumbie is translated as a spirit. The Moko Jumbie, portrayed by stilt dancers, culturally is believed to be the protective spirit guarding the village from evil forces.
In St. Croix, the Guardians of Culture Moko Jumbies - spearheaded by Mr. Willard John - keeps this cultural tradition alive by teaching each new generation its significance. Visitors and locals alike can watch these dancers perform at festivals and cultural events all year long. And trust me, you do not want to miss them performing.
