The first stage depicts the state in which we experience conflicting  or strong emotions, often caused by a trauma or pain. Emotions such as anger, sadness, confusion, or even despair took control of our mind and spirit.  This is represented by the waves crashing into one another creating high energy clash and commotion.  Everything creates unease in our being.
